Composition of Debt by Creditor

The chart illustrates the composition of Greek public debt by creditor from 2010 onwards, distinguishing between the portion held by the private sector and the official sector. According to the chart data, in 2010–2011, the largest portion of the debt was held by the private sector, with percentage exceeding 70%. From 2012 onwards, a shift in the debt structure is observed, as Greek public debt has been mainly held by the official sector. Over the last few years, however, the share of the private sector has been gradually increasing, reflecting the increase of issuance activity in the financial markets.
